Any one have an old dead 1 ton ferd?

Postby Optiskate » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:19 pm

Any one have an old dead 78-79 1 ton ford floating around. Like dead dead. Smashed, unworkable body, mangled frame, exploded engine or trans, or something like that. I'm looking to possibly take one off some ones hands. Hell I don't care if the truck was involved in a fatal accident and is now haunted. I'll call the damn ghost busters.

There are 2 ferd 60's on tc, one bj the other kingpin. The little bit of room gained from 78-79 is miniscule especially for what people think they are worth...

I like the 78-79 for ease of install. Buy the TnT truss, burn it on, bolt it up. You can get it with all your brackets pre-welded on. That was my plan until the deal on the one I found fell through today. I knew it had a bad pinion bearing and R&P. The guy said he popped the cover and the whole inside of the diff was chewed up. I guess the race that the pinion bearing seats in was totally destroyed. He said he was just going to scrap it.

I just wanted easy due to the fact that I have very little time to do anything. I mean I work long hours and my weekend time is some what limited.

I'm almost considering a 3/4 ton HP D44 as I can do the same truss deal. I'm just unsure of the D44. I don't know man.... Either way is expensive and I don't want to be disappointed with the D44 and wish I had went 60.

You can't build a truss? Take it to your pop and turn him loose I'm sure he'd enjoy himself.. Its up to you if a 44 survives or not, everything breaks eventually.

I suppose I could build just about anything provided I could get my welding skills up to par. Any welding I was going to have my dad do any way. He loves any excuse to get out and fabricate, machine stuff, or wrench on rigs. Hell, hes all but taken over building both my brothers cars. They might as well be his projects. Like I said before though, its all about time. A ready to burn on truss is more time effective for me.

I'm so up in the air on going D44 instead. I'm less worried about it in the dirt on the trail than I am when I go play on rock. It seems like when I stuck around town to wheel all I did was Webber or I'd play where I could find big rocks and ledges. So there lies my problem. Throw tons of cash at a 44 and break it still or throw tons of cash at tons and have some survivability.

I was thinking about maybe finding a later model HP60 and ditching coils up front altogether. Maybe just biting the bullet and going FOA coil overs. They're not very expensive at all. Actually, they're pretty affordable.

Coils are easy, just don't run tj large diameter ones but some meant for 2 1/2" coilovers instead. Or airshocks are less than half of coilovers too.

Ya know GM axles have enough room for whatever you want to run, are super common, have stronger knuckles, would let you run the exhaust like it should have been from the start and you wouldn't have to flip a 300 to double up the cases...

You speak the truth on that one. It would be a lot more work though. I'm just going to have to think over my options. Its really frustrating to be honest. I though for sure I'd finally score myself the elusive 78-79 HP60 and that everything would be down hill build build build from here. I never expected that news.

Pffft more work my butt.. The only "hard" part is the upper truss and moving the exhaust to where it should have been. You wouldn't have to deal with the stupidity of a flipped 300 or worse the crap chain in another 231 doubled up. You do realize they make the GM truss for running coils too right?

Actually, I have a few general questions. I don't know if you'll know the answer to them as they're kind of TJ specific, but I'll ask'em tomorrow.

Could have fooled me. I've heard you rattle off random facts that only a ninja master would know.
