I've got my cb and onboard air systems just sitting in my garage. They've been there for quite a while. Its hard to work up the energy to put it all in when it doesn't run
I'm hoping after a few more things it will be ok. I've been thinkin about doin dual batteries bc ill have my offroad lights, cb, air, as well as eventually a winch. And with it killing my battery as is it sounds like a good idea to me
"a road is merely a suggestion" "Your ricers not so fast with a Jeep on it" "When was the last time you got an adrenaline rush at 3mph?" "Jeeps dont leak, they just mark their territory"
Cope, I think the dual batteries may be a bit over kill. A good alternator and quality battery well mounted to a battery tray should be able to keep your accessiories going. May be you will have to turn off the Off-Road ligths when you run a winch or on-board air pump.
Have you figured out why your rig does not run?

I don't Text (at least not very well), I eat Blackberrys, and I only Twitter after sex...
Dual Batteries are good for two things:
1. Looooooooong winch pulls under a big load.
2. Starting your rig if Battery #1 fails.
Everything other than the winch should run well under the amperage of your alternator. If it does not, you are screwed even if you run 12 batteries.
When using a winch under load, it is drawing upwards of 300amps so, even if you have a 100amp alternator, you are drawing the battery(ies) down really fast. Like ST says above. . .power management is the key.
IF you do go dual batteries: Make sure that they are good ones, are a matched set, and are set up properly (either switched or isolated). In other words, a decent dual battery set up is going to run 3-400. . .
To me, that sounds like roll cage money.

I've been working on my sand rail. Heading to christmas valley sand dunes this weekend. I found the timing belt was off by a couple of teeth. Also found the intake valves had kissed the pistons as a result. Didn't bend any valves but did a valve job anyway. Going back to the holley 4 barrell intake. Replaced the stinger tail pipe with a spark arester style muffler. Replacing the cutting brake and installing new lights on the front. Still have lots to due but I took friday off so it shouldn't be a problem getting it all done by this weekend.
You can follow me.... but it's gonna hurt
Valves kissing the pistons? Cant be all THAT bad. I have worked on several motorcycle engines that do that, even when everything is adjusted right! The last one was a CR450F. The valves didnt actually hit the pistons, but you could see where the valve heads left impressions in the carbon buildup.
I've been working on the Jeep. Got the rear axle pumpkin back to where it should be, and welded the pumpkin to the outer tubes. Also got the axle shaft installed and new head gasket installed.
I also did a little work on the Pitster. Got the knobby wheels installed so I can take it to the mountains this weekend.

As far as I know it was the starter solenoid arcing on the positive side. I'm guessing it was just killing my spark. But I haven't had the energy to push start it to find out. When I work up the energy to pull the tranny again ill know.

One of the previous owners put some serious money into this thing. I'm not sure what they did to the bottom end but the parts I have been into look spendy. I'm pretty excited to see how it runs with the cam set up right. Was hoping to get a test run in before this weekend but doesn't look like I'm going to have time.

Laboring on the Ford Day Weekend. What else could go wrong? Sorry, long post.
I spent half the weekend working on the '95 Ford pickup. The truck has been plagued with a intermintent starting problem for over a month. It only starts on rare occasion when it wants to. I didn't dare drive it anywhere. The rear fuel pump was out when I got it. A few weeks ago, I checked and had no fuel pressure to the rail, so I decided to lift the bed and replace both pumps. Can now hear the pumps fire up and the truck started. Fixed! WRONG. A day later..no start, no spark. So I bought an ignition control module and installed it..nothing. I just let it sit for awhile and went on vacation.
Friday, my friend from the D-Rats came over to take a look. "Lets go to PAW and get a coil for it and see what happens. You need a bracket anyway", he says. (Lud was there, somewhere, I saw his TJ,
) We return with a bracket and a coil for $10.00 and install it. The truck fires right up. Fixed! WRONG. No start, no spark after we wash up and put the tools away.
Next, we take off the dist. cap. Hmm, looks a little dirty and worn in there. We mark the location and pull it out. Went to the parts store and bought a new magnetic pick-up. Pulled the gear and the shaft to install the new part. Got it all back together, without the proper tools, (foreshadowing), and it fired up. But it ran like crap, really bad crap! Leonard suggested we move it to his house as he has better tools and a timing light. So I drove it to his house, popping, spuddering, and backfiring the whole 2 mile trip. Now that was fun!
By that time it was getting hot out, way too bright to see the timing light, so it's off to the river. Later that evening, we still can't get it to run right. Must have been off a tooth or so on the dist. Pulled out the dist. again and the oil pump rod comes out with it.
(See above..pounding the gear back on made the rod stick in the shaft) Then, it releases and falls right back into the hole and down into the oil pan.
That's it. Time for a cocktail. The next morning we drop the oil pan and retrieve the rod. Picked up a new cap and rotor while I bought some fresh oil. Follow the firing order on the airbox cover, reinstall distributor, put the light on it, and it still runs terrible. Shaking, spuddering, etc. Running out of ideas, I leave a message on previous owner Chrispy's cell phone asking about firing order issues on this motor. Then I call another friend and ask him to read me the firing order on his pickup of the same year and motor..351. It's totally different. WTH? Re-did the plug wires to the different firing order and TA DAH!! Runs perfect...better than ever!! Curious, I rubbed the dirt off the rest of the sticker on the airbox. It's for a 302.
Right then Chris calls me back. I asked him if the truck ever had a 302 in it. He said no, he swapped a 351 for another 351. He asked me why and I told him about the firing order sticker on the airbox. "Oh, he laughed, I got that airbox out of another truck with a 302 in it!"
DOH just my luck!!
Well, good news is, the truck has started everytime for the rest of the weekend, and I have been hauling the boat around with it instead of the Jeep. I think I better give it a couple weeks before I start tearing into the TJ to install my stuff. Just in case!
Hope you all had a great Labor Day Weekend.

Wow you actually pulled the pan to get the drive shaft? I've pulled pans and found I kid you not 4 shafts in there... Usually find one in about every other pan I pull.
Ford did some extremely confusing/STUPID things over the years. Such as the switch from internal to external on the 302. Not only is it silly but it also meant they changed the timing cover for some odd reason. The 302/351 firing order being different is dumb as well. Why would you have 3 engines all with the same displacement and 2 of which have interchangeable parts?
You have to know exactly what application you need a part for with an older mix and matched ferd as you are QUICKLY discovering Dave...

Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.
