IH Scout to be recognized as an Official American Icon

US Congressman Tim Walz of the 1st Dist. Minnesota along with some of his colleagues will officially recognize the Scout as the American icon it is. They will enter into the congressional record a history of the Scout and the passion it brings out in folks who love a piece of American history. This was to happen this week and my brother Dave and myself were set to attend the event in Washington DC. however they are debating a Defense spending bill this week so the time will be very limited for this to take place during the US House of Representatives Special Orders time. So Congressman Walz may read a brief statement regarding this and then he may do the official reading of the history and some stories after they return from recess in the next month or two according to Sara Severs Communications Director for Mr. Walz. The special orders sessions are filmed on C-Span so you may want to watch or TVR the house of Reps. channel Thursday night thru Friday Morning.

We hope to put together a small delegation of Scout owners to attend the event at the Capital if it is held later in the summer. I want to Thank Jeff Bade for his help with this.

There is a good amount of aftermarket support but NOTHING like Toyota and Jeeps.

They're out there. I prefer the Scout II because that's what most of my hard wheeling was done in, and it always treated me good. Our club in Coos Bay was more than half Scouts. Maybe the local dealer being a member had some bearing on

Like many of you, I am a binder guy, sometimes against all logic, who loves these great pieces of American steel (and rust). As you all know, this year marks the Scout’s 50th Anniversary. These stories you are writing are the stories of America; stories about hard working people who respect our history and believe it is worth preserving. Restoring a Scout brings out our unique American personality: ingenuity, perseverance, thriftiness, self-reliance, humbleness, a can-do spirit when everyone says it cannot be done. The Scout was built in the heartland on these principles.

We are gathering these stories to honor the Scout in the U.S. House of Representatives. I am a retired artilleryman, teacher, football coach and currently have the honor of representing the great people of southern Minnesota’s First District in Congress. Some of my colleagues and I will be honoring the IH Scout’s heritage on the House Floor this summer. With your permission, we would like to use some of your personal accounts in our tribute. I will use mine and tell about the previous owner who's other "Scout" is a helicopter. She is currently one of our brave warrior pilots in the U.S. Army.

For me, like for so many of you, restoring and driving a Scout is a family affair and my kids Hope and Gus love the corn binder. Thanks to Jeff and the Binder Planet community for a great place to learn, share, and help with this commemoration. Please feel free to comment on the history and people who are part of the Scout legacy. Thank you all for keeping the Scout alive and kicking!"
