bought a donor truck pissed my dads girlfriend off

Postby cole sellers » Fri Nov 15, 2013 3:19 pm

I recently posted about how i blew a transmission up in my power wagon... i was having issues finding one set up for four wheel drive so i bought an 84 ram charger as a donor. The ramcharger has the 360 in it wich is the step up from the 318 thats in my pickup but i was wondering if it would be possible to rip out all the emissions crap when i do the swap. I was considering swapping the axels and transfer case so i could have manual locking hubs. at the moment my power wagon is full time four wheel drive. Would it be worth the time or should i stick with what i already have? The reason i ask is i want to put lockers in it maybe within the next few months... and yes when i showed up with a ram charger it did piss my step mom off... my dad was fine with it though haha

....you can take all the emissions off typically easier to just buy a aftermarkett intake and carb (that way you dont play hell getting all the vacuum ports blocked off and it looks much better) you probably had a np203 in your powerwagon (giant cast iron pos) the alum 208 that the ramcharger has is fairly tough your axles though are probably the same d44 front and 8.25 in the back (your truck probably has lower gears) the only difference would be the outters (unless one is the unit bearing axle

I figured they would be the same but i figured that transfer case would require manual locking hubs? The axels on my power wagon dont have them because its all time four wheel drive... and yeah i know ramchargers are cool but i like my truck hahah

I was wondering if it would be possible to eliminate all the emissions crap when I do the engine swap?

Emissions crap:

I would ditch it if possible, and learn to tune your carb. It is carbureted, right? Dont know anything about the Dodge engines to know what is directly swappable, though. Whatever you do, do NO elminate the crankcase recirculation setup (pcv valve line to one valve cover and the other vent line from the air intake to a second port on the valve cover). Do some research on how it works. It helps reduce the contamination of your engine oil and keeps a vacuum on the crank case (a good thing). This is especially critical in a carbureted engine, as it will help keep fuel contamination of the engine oil to a minimum.

Axles:

I have no idea. Not enough details. What gears are in them? What tire size do you plan to run? What axles are they? Making an axle swap decision without these details is just silliness.

my truck right now doesnt have normal manual locking hubs, those would be the axels that i would be wanting to get rid of.

im not sure of the gearing but i was told that the gearing would be way lower in the axels on my truck then the axels under the ramcharger, i would want to be running 35s maybe 36s.

in the front of the ramchrger theyrs dana 44s and i think a 60 in the rear and thats the same in my power wagon.

and abvout the emissions... the 318 thats in my power wagon is carburated and so is the 360 in the ramcharger so i was going to swap out my intake and carburator to the 360... ill do some research on the crankcase reserculation setup. ill also do the research on what gears are in both and hopefully popst it all up sometime today

thanks for all the input, its been very helpfull

the ramcharger will have a different rear axle if your truck is 3/4 ton only will have dana 60 if 3/4 ton chrysler 9.25 axle if half ton

does your front axle in the truck look like this?
Image

if so you can just take the manual hubs and install them in place of the drive slugs that are there, which is what you will probably want to do

i have the half ton so i guess that would mean i have the 9.25, ive never heard of that so is it wothless and i should be looking to replace it or is it actually useful? will the ramcharger have the 9.25 in it?

if i just swap the hubs off the ramcharger would i need to swap the transfer case as well? right now the power wagon has the np203 in it, not sure whats in the ramcharger as far as transfer cases go

yes to put the manual hubs in you need to either get a part time kit in the 203 or replace it (thats what i would do over part time kit) both will have 9.25's theyre not too bad i would leave it in there until you have problems 36ish inch tires arent too overly large for it,

awesome thats probably what ill do then that way i can keep the lower gear ratio in the power wagon thanks again for all the help should have the tranny pulled out of the ramcharger on my next day off (thursday) then ill pull the axle out of the front end to pull the hubs off inside my shop so i dont have to work outside in the cold.
