440 to 383 mopar big block swap

Postby cole sellers » Tue Mar 04, 2014 11:15 am

ive got a couple questions that my dad needs answering.

my dads fj40 has a 1977 440 big block in it. i recently bought a ramcharger as a donor rig for my powerwagon it has the 360 in it and i got offered a 383 big block out of a 1971 super bee in trade for the 360.

i did some research and found that the crank in the 440 is cast so instead of being internally balanced they balanced it on the torque converter. (if i read that right) and the 383s crank is forged and internally balanced so the question is... would the torque converter and flywheel from the 440 work on the 383?

and also the 383 is missing the carburator, the exhaust manifolds, and the distributor. i know the carb will fit but i was wondering if the ditributor would swap from the 440 to the 383 and the stock manifolds as well?

just wondering if anybodys got any experience with these types of motors and or any advice. thanks in advance for any help given

you will need a 383 converter. will have balance issues, odds are different distributers I think 383 and 400 are the same while 413 and 440 ect share those

manifold I think will work as you can swap heads throughout I believe

intake is an inch thinner then the one on the 440 but the guy we got the engine from actually had one so we got that off of him to.

the carburator fit with a spacer so the linkage wouldnt get jammed up on the intake. the exhaust manifolds bolted up perfectly fine so so far so good.

turns out the motors not a 71 its a 69 and not originally out of a superbee (looked upthe numbers) and the distributor wont fit so we ordered one that does.

we got the motor swapped its in the fj now but we cant get it to start its not getting any spark off the coil before it even gets to the distributor. its already got a brand new coil on it... we rerplaced it when it was on the 440... im thinking maybe its not grounded well enough but thats just nmy best guess.

any thoughts?
