Hah, been almost a year since I've updated this.


So I might have found a parts rig that has some stuff I really need to finish my truck, but I have a quick stupid question.



Does this look like a 327 Chevy?

Correct engine for the year would have been a 327 Vigilante, but all the pics of those I can see have the water outlet in another spot, which makes me think that the engine pictured really is a Chevy and not AMC.

It's a small block chevy of some sort. Hard to tell from that pic if it's a 327 or any other sbc.

That is what I figured, just wanted someone to confirm. The vigilante from that era usually has the funny oil fill tube, and I hadn't seen one on a chevy before. SBC is easier to work with.

That is an AMC 327. Stock motor for that truck. Short deck version of the later 304, 360, 401.

Nope, SBC. AMC 327 had goofy looking valve covers with angled ends and two bolts holding them on that went in thru the top and threaded into the rocker retainers, and a water tube between the heads that held the t-stat.

That was my first thought, it would make the most sense. However, it just didn't look right, pretty sure now it's a SBC. Oil fill tube, and t-stat housing or in the wrong place.

SBC. At that age, the only way to know the stroke is to check the numbers on the crank. You never know if it's stock or not.

Not the same engine. Your 304 was pure AMC. The 327, according to my noodling, was kinda part Packard, part Kieser, with AMC influences. This peaked my curious bone, so I did some research. Cross bread thing to start with really.

So, picked this up in Idaho today.

1964 J200 3/4 Ton Thriftside Gladiator






Wasn't running, I bought it primarily for the bed to drop onto my other gladiator. It's in far better shape than the one I have currently.

However I discovered it had Dana 60's, and some 3 speed manual transmission. Dunno what it is, same for transfer case. I'm going to have to pay more attention to that after I get it off the trailer.

Has a SBC of some flavor, previous owner says it's a 327. He said the carb and starter were bad. I cleaned up all the battery cables and starter connections, threw on an 650 CFM Edelbrock carb I had sitting around and it started right up.

Engine sounds good, and vacuum is right where it should be. I was going to cannibalize a lot of the other parts off of it, but now I'm thinking that I'll pull off the bed and leave the rest of it as it is. A second running and driving Gladiator can't be a bad thing. It''s even got a massive Ramsey PTO winch all hooked up, and according to the owner it works.

I need to finish welding up the bumpers for my grand Cherokee and then the tow rig project can resume.

You're right, it's not. It's a 44 of some flavor, and the rear is a Dana 53, not a 60. Too much bad info on the internet.
