Hey you 'yota guys...

Postby iaccocca » Fri Aug 15, 2008 8:50 pm

My hunting buddy just bught a '86 Toyota pick 'em up. Yesterday he noticed his passenger side rear wheel / axle flange is 6 lug while each of the other three corners are 5 lug. Special factoy option? :mdr How hard is swapping out toy axle shafts? I assume they are one peice. He's in Seattle and has few tools and less mechanical knowlege. If he picks up a junkyard axle, what do you think a decent shop would charge him to correct the number of lugs? Or, should I just tell him to carry a second (6 lug) spare?
Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

I'll assume its a 2 wheel drive 1 ton? Thats the only direct swap thats 5 lug that is also interchangeable with a 6 lug 4 wheel drive.

Have him look at the bolts holding the 3rd member in the housing. If there are 10 bolts its a 1 ton or V6 axle so he'd just have to find another one to match.

If its got 8 bolts holding the 3rd in its a generic 2wheel drive rear end and someone did some funny work to get a 6 lug shaft into it...

What I'd do is hit craigslist etc and find another 2wd rear end and swap it out. Its super simple to work on no matter what it is or what he does so he should have no issues. 8)

Wait a second.... You sure it isn't 6 lug on three corners and 5 lug on one? That'd make sense but the other way doesn't....

Yup you'll find a lot of 1 ton single wheel 2x's mostly long box 84-88. They have the same 30 spline shafts and 8" ring & pinion as the 4x's rather than the 7.5" r&p and 27 (I think) shafts.

The continuing saga...

10 bolts...

Yep... every corner, but one is 5 lug. I'm gonna tell him to send pics.

Now do you see my confusion?

If it has 5 lug on one corner then he just needs to get the correct axle shaft from a 4x and toss it in there. My neighbor has a single shaft/brake assembly sitting around so it wouldn't be breaking up a complete rear end. I'll see what he wants for it.

Yeah... about that. I called my buddy to make sure that I was getting the facts right. My buddy (really quite a bright guy, masters degree, scientist, hell of a flyfisherman) was counting the lug nuts on his hubcaps! Feel free to make fun of me, I'll just pass it on.
Thanks for all of your help Trashy, but there are some things you just can't fix (but I owe you a beer.)
Now, in my defense, I told him to lose the hubcaps the first day he sent me pics of it.

I'll pass that on. I want him to have this thing set up reliable, because I do not want to spend my hunting trips winching his rig around. (Like the Putters do for me on snow runs 8-0 )
