archery hunting week 1&2

I am only able to go hunting on my days off which are tuesday and wednesdays, and have to wait for my fiance to get off work on tuesdays so we only get in a night hunt.

This week we went to the walla walla unit to check on a herd of 20-30 elk. Scouted around for a while but couldnt find any new sign of them since the other week. Seen a couple head of doe's, one spike (if you could call him that), then we seen 3 nice bull elk [B]BUT[B] they were about a mile away an 2 miles down a 70 degree angle hill.

We camped at jubilee lake tuesday night, wednesday morning we did some fishing. I caught a 6-7 inch rainbow trout, but i let him go since we were going to be heading out huinting again.

Then we headed over to kamela and headed towards Ukiah, hunted the border of Ukiah unit and Starkey unit. Seen a couple more doe's, other than that we didnt see a whole hell of alot. Just about nightfall, we ended up in frazier up ontop of a hillside checking out a forest service sign. Heard a single cow call, figured id try out my bull call just to see if i could get any response.

I bugled once and did a couple snorts, got a bugle back and crashing through the brush down the hillside. bugled again and nothing, so i switched to a cow call and had a little conversation back and fourth but he wouldnt come up the hillside, and it was just about dark out. I could hear him bugling straight down the hillside but could hear something move every once in a while off to my right.

Found out i am better at calling than i thought. Not only did i have a bull bugling back, i called in a damn cougar. Cougar off to my right, really dark by now, truck to my left, TIME TO GO.

yah it connects to walla walla unit of washington. from one hill side we could see jubilee lake on one side and the lights of walla walla on the other.

we pulled out of the house at 2AM when i got home from work and headed up above anthony lakes. got up there about 5AM, parked and caught like an hour of sleep. got some good pics of the sun rising, still snow up there from last winter. traveled some of the roads around there, decided to head back to desolation.

hunted a couple areas in desolation, seen lots of doe's. camped at olive lake, did a little fishing, my allergies were kicking my a$$, was so tired since i only had an hour of sleep in 32 hours so the gf and i took a nap then got up and had dinner and went back to sleep lol.

got up, had breakfast, picked up camp, and headed out to hunt some more. hunted our way out of desolation and towards frazier area. went up above where i seen the cougar last week, definatly packing the .357 this time lol. seen 3 other hunters, they sid theyve been there for a week and hadnt seen anything and havnt even heard bugling for the last 4 nights. so we headed on down the road a little further. the gf said she seen an elk down by the river but when we turned around, nothing. went down the road and she said she seen a herd of elk, turned around and nothing, by now she was getting pissed lol.

we went up a road just past where she said she seen the heard of elk and sat on a prairie for a while, waited and called. got a weak bugle back, went back and fourth for a couple times but e wasnt comming in and it was getting dark and i had a job interview this morning so we headed back in. this time i seen 2 elk along the road where she seen the herd, backed up and they were heading back up into the trees.

so we know where we are going this weekend. this year has been weird, havnt seen any elk up high, all have been seen down low.
