Possible Oregon Tire Restrictions

To all:



If you like to drive a vehicle with different than OEM tires than you had better get on the phone or email and contact your representatives on this one. Oregon’s Governor is pursuing a bill that will make it illegal to install tires of a greater rolling resistance than stock. This means that even mud or snow tires will be illegal even if they are the same size due to the softer compound and higher rolling resistance. Taller or wider than stock tires will be completely out of the question. More info here including how to contact your representative:

If you don’t live in Oregon you may still want to contact these people and your local representative so these lame ideas don’t come up in your state.

True, but even my tow rig has "aggressive" tires compared to the stockers. Heck, my wife's Yukon has tires that would pinch me in this situation... Come to think of it, so does our motorhome...

SUMMARY
The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the measure and is not a part of the body thereof subject

measure as introduced.
Authorizes Environmental Quality Commission to adopt rules to help state to achieve
greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. Specifies rules that commission may adopt.
Declares emergency, effective on passage.
A BILL FOR AN ACT
Relating to greenhouse gas emissions; and declaring an emergency.
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
SECTION 1. Sections 2 and 3 of this 2009 Act are added to and made a part of ORS
chapter 468A.
SECTION 2. As used in section 3 of this 2009 Act:
(1) “Greenhouse gasâ€

(2) In adopting rules under this section, the commission:
(a) Shall consider safety, feasibility and cost-effectiveness; and
(b) May differentiate between different areas of the state, different greenhouse gases and
different categories of substances, fuels, motor vehicles or other equipment or activities that
contribute directly or indirectly to greenhouse gas emissions.
SECTION 4. This 2009 Act being necessary for the immediate preservation of the public
peace, health and safety, an emergency is declared to exist, and this 2009 Act takes effect
on its passage.

Maybe they should take a look at BEEF. Look at all the greenhouse gasses that the universities have pointed out from cattle flatulence. By doing away with beef, we could reduce the methane, no more truck needed hauling beef to the slaughterhouses, no more beef deliveries to grocery stores.... look at the gas and emissions savings from no one driving to McD's and the like for their hamburgers, knock off all the milk, cheese, fat, why there's health benefits too. Cary that on to pork, etc. Much better emissions savings that just trucks rolling tire resistance.... and gee..... it's not any more half baked than what they are suggesting.......................

Following sams88 line of thinking... They should outlaw Kashi Go-Lean, high fiber & high protein ceral as well as Vegetarians. That would greatly reduce flatulence and twisted logic.

Like why don't they just sit back, I'm sure that Exxon, Mobil, and all the rest will continue with the rising gas prices again which will do more to reduce the vehicle related emissions than any rolling wheel resistance legislation is going to do.

This proposed bill is just a guise under an "emergency" that the rest of the states, federal govt, and countries of the world aren't really seriously working at. As for contributing crud into the air, what about all those smudge pots in the orchards? Grow that stuff further south where the smudge pots aren't needed. Why aren't the greenies screaming about that kind of stuff? So if it is "really" an emergency, then apply the concern across the board where some real results can be achieved. Picking on the tires is just taking the path of least effort on their part cause they won't have to go up against any highly organized special interest groups and get some real results. What about all the fireplaces, etc., and on and on. Either get real about doing something or quit the posturing and worthless knee-jerking just to try and say they are doing something.

Uh, guys, the largest tire retailer on the west coast is headquartered in Prineville, Oregon. How much money in after market specialty sales do they make? You don't seriously think LS and the rest of the tire industry are going to let this happen, do you?

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about House Bill 2186. Your feedback is important to me and helps inform the actions I take in the Legislature.



As you may be aware, HB 2186 is a part of Governor Kulongoski’s effort to raise environmental standards in over state and limit carbon emissions.



The intent of section (3)(1)(d) is to allow the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission to set standards for certain replacement parts that can increase greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, not to ban parts. The standards would apply to both after-market products as well as original parts to the vehicle. The rules would be designed to prevent a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions from replacement parts while still ensuring a full range of consumer choice in products. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) does not expect this to affect a large number of products. The proposal is modeled after similar changes in states like California to improve, not ban, automotive parts.



In their testimony before the House Environment and Water Committee, DEQ made clear their commitment to amend the bill with new language to be written in cooperation with the Northwest Automotive Trades Association, the Automobile Aftermarket Industry Association and others to clarify their intent.
